Problem Fixes

I am having trouble dialing in to my Internet connection.

Here are some common things to check.

Does your computer display the normal Dialup displays?
  • Try Start, settings, control Panel, modem; to see if the modem is still listed, if not, try adding the modem again..
  • If the dialup display has changed, the software may be corrupted and need to be re-installed or re-configured.
  • If the operating system uses "plug and play", it may mean that it is not detecting your serial port or modem.
  • Check that the modem is connected.
    Try re-configuring the dialer.

Something may have become disconnected.
  • Check the telephone cord from the wall to the modem.
  • If the modem is external, check the data cable from the computer to the modem.
  • If the modem is external, check the power to your modem.

Do you hear the normal modem noises?
  • If not, check the data cable from the computer to the modem (if it is external).
  • Check the power to your modem (if it is external).
  • Check the telephone cord at the wall and at the modem.
  • Check that your telephone line is working with regular telephone service.

If the computer dials but keeps getting a busy signal.
  • Your provider may not have enough telephone lines to handle the number of customers trying to call.
  • There may be a problem with one of the phone lines you are trying to call, try calling an alternate number if you have one.

Is the computer is dialing, and nothing is answering the call.
  • Your service provider may have new phone numbers, check with them.

Your computer dials, something answers, but your connection is refused.
  • Your user ID and password may be wrong or changed, check the settings on your computer.
  • Your provider may need to re-enter your information.
